I live in Gulfport Mississippi, well in the city limits. I stepped out to the backyard last Friday andspotted a baby snake high tailing it across my patio. Not sure what it is tho. My 12 year old son and a mutual friend caught a smaller one of the same species a few months back. The friend told him it was a water moccasin, but I’m not sure. Pic attached, thanks for any help. It is about 7 inches long, white belly, tan down low up to a golden tan on top and has some slightly darker golden tan spots.
Hope you are doing well. Found this small (18- 24″) dead snake today close to our new residence in Dunsmuir, CA. An acquaintance of ours thinks its a hybrid between a Western (Diamondback) Rattlesnake and a Gopher Snake. Can you tell from the pix what it is?
Readers: What Are These Snakes?
-This is not a pop quiz, any kind of research is encouraged and I hope you will engage with other commenters to try to figure these snakes out. I will eventually chime in with my thoughts.
-Assume I know what kind of snake is in the picture. I run these posts because they are outreach opportunities. Please don’t send me private e-mails with your guesses, include them below.
-Remember, the person that sent me the picture is probably reading your comments. Although it is frustrating to know that many of these snakes have been killed, these people do want to learn more about them. More snake knowledge will lead to fewer snakes being killed. Don’t hate, educate.
